Unit 13 & 14 Devising in the Physical Theatre style of Rash Dash Theatre Company

Film One - Creating a duet through improvisation using the words 'Over, Under, Through'

Film Two - Layering Dramatic intention onto the duet exploring the relationship of Victim and Oppressor

Written analysis of devising in the physical theatre style of Rash Dash

In this lesson with experimented with the use of improvisation, this meant we had to create our own interpretation of how we could show 'Over, Under, Through', we had to rely on our creativity skills working on this because we had to interpret the words in a range of different movements. We had to express the words through a movement that shows how the two people move smoothly 'Over, Under & Through' one another, we then had to add dynamics to the duet and this meant showing emotion through the movements and 'telling a story'.

An aspect of the 'Rash Dash' style I have enjoyed most is being able to use improvisation and creativity to create a dance, this meant we weren't given choreography for the duet instead we had to decide which movements fit best for the words given. This gave us freedom to use our own ideas to create a dance piece.

An aspect I struggled with when we first started experimenting with 'Rash Dash' was being out of my comfort zone as the movements are very close and personal with the other person you are working with. We also had to be able to create a range of different movements that don't repeat each other and this could be difficult at times.

Rash Dash Theatre Company

Rash Dash is a British feminist theatre company, founded by Abbi Greenland and Helen Goalen and then Becky Wilkie who joined the two later on. The three have created many pieces, most notably 'We Want You To Watch'.

Abbi and Helen formed Rash Dash in 2009 while attending the University of Hull together, they started by taking one of their pieces 'Strict Machine' to the National Student Drama Festival. Their first official play was 'The Honeymoon' which they created with Becky, and since then the three have created many pieces of work since they first started.

Rash Dash Theatre Company's work can be described as 'punking feminist theatre'. They aim to celebrate and make space for people to be their fullest selves, and they tell stories that call for cultural change and allow people to have the right to be different from others, to live and love radically and be wild and playful, they show that life is better when we learn to live fully in our bodies and be our most authentic selves. Collaboration and community are central to their process and work, they work with a range of creators, musicians and performers to make theatre, music, dance, film and events. They want people who engage with their work to feel seen, heard, celebrated, delighted and less alone.
